Birmingham-Southern College Launches Master of Science in Data Science Program

Birmingham, AL (09/27/2023) — BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern College announces that a new Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) Program has begun for the Fall 2023 Term. Designed with working professionals in mind, the BSC MSDS Program has combined a liberal arts education and data science to provide a holistic approach to problem-solving, preparing BSC graduates for distinctive careers in the field.

BSC’s MSDS program consists of twelve courses over two years taught in a hybrid format, combining online instruction with periodic in-person immersive weekend experiences on the Birmingham-Southern campus. Students can stay in on-campus housing during these in-person weekend experiences, which are required once each term. Current BSC MSDS students will be on campus Oct. 19-22, 2023, for in-class instruction and opportunities to meet with local business leaders, as well as to experience the hospitality of the Birmingham community.

“According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be 11.5 million job openings in data science by 2026. Filling these openings in our community will be vital to growing the Birmingham economy. Closing the workforce gap is necessary to fuel the city’s fastest-growing companies,” said BSC President Daniel B. Coleman. “BSC will have an even more significant impact on Birmingham’s future by providing data science leaders to the companies that are most likely to create new jobs,” Coleman added.

The BSC Master in Data Science Program is dynamic, with a cutting-edge curriculum developed to provide the abilities and information needed to succeed in the fast-moving field of data science. Applications are being accepted through December 11, 2023, for the Spring Term beginning on January 5, 2024. Application requirements can be found at graduate.bsc.edu.
