1990s
Natalie Bahri Fortson ’97 is the 2023 recipient of the Alabama State Nurses Association Charlene Roberson Mentorship Award, recognizing her outstanding mentoring of young nurses in her role as head of the RN Internship Program at UAB. The award will be formally presented in October at the ASNA’s annual meeting. A voice major at BSC, she is a trained soprano who sings in the choir at First United Methodist Church and in the BSC Alumni Choir.
Melissa “Missy” Hill Haughery ’97 is the new executive director of Down Syndrome Alabama. A Mobile native, she earned a master’s in educational leadership from UAH and spent 26 years as an English teacher at Hewitt-Trussville Junior High School, Mary G. Montgomery High School, and Hoover High School. At BSC, Haughery was a member of Chi Omega. Read more about her new role in the Hoover Sun.
Ashley Davenport ’99 was hired as the new college counselor at Homewood High School and is featured in the Homewood Star. She has previously served in the same role at John Carroll Catholic High School and as a school counselor at The Altamont School and Hoover High School. A psychology/sociology major at BSC, she is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi.
2000s
Graham Burgess '01 is joining the Huntsville office of Maynard Nexsen after serving as a partner at Lanier Ford. He practices commercial and industrial real estate and financing law. Burgess has been named a Rising Star by SuperLawyers.com four times. A psychology major from Huntsville, he played on the BSC baseball team, helping the Panthers to the 2001 NAIA national title. Burgess earned his law degree from the University of Alabama.
Clay Bounds is the new head men's golf coach at Troy University. A member of BSC's golf team from 2009-2010, he finished his playing career at Mississippi State University. Bounds has previously served as an assistant coach at Rice University and West Virginia University.
2020s
C.J. LeCroy ’21 graduated from Navy Nuclear Power School in July. A third-generation Navy sailor, he was commissioned as an officer last year. In college, LeCroy was a member of Alpha Tau Omega, the track team, and the football team.
Two BSC alumnae -- Caroline Meffert ’22 and Maya Donaldson ’23 -- have joined the BSC team as Admission Counselors. Both were members of the BSC swim team, with Meffert serving as captain during her senior year.
In Memoriam
Dr. J. David Fraley, Jr., of Birmingham on July 8. A North Carolina native, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina in 1963 and completed his graduate work just down the road at Duke University, earning his Ph.D. in 1971. Dr. Fraley taught history at BSC for 36 years and is remembered by his students as a master teacher with a sharp sense of humor. His pet peeve was when his students wouldn’t study. He enjoyed listening to all kinds of music, both popular and classical, but, according to his daughter Pam, he just couldn’t get into grunge once it came along. Dr. Fraley was an avid baseball fan, specifically of the New York Yankees. He is survived by his wife, Ann.
Meghann Cook Laney ’06 of Birmingham on July 25. Earning an art degree from BSC, she loved painting and creating pieces for many others to enjoy. Laney excelled at decorating homes and cultivating new environments for her clients. She was an advocate for people with special needs and devoted countless hours working to better the lives of those less fortunate than her. Laney enjoyed listening to all kinds of music, especially The Beatles, her favorite band.
Dr. B.E. “Bill” Richardson ’68 of Jasper on July 12. After earning a biology degree from BSC, he attended the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and completed a surgery residency at Carraway Methodist Hospital. Richardson practiced medicine at Walker Baptist Hospital as a general surgeon for more than 40 years and was a board-certified member of the American College of Surgeons. He was an active member of Jasper First Methodist Church.
Lowry Claiborne Stanford ’64 of Birmingham on July 29. The son of former BSC president Henry King Stanford, he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega in college. As an accounting major, he had a long career as a certified public accountant, most recently at SPD Accounting Group. He is survived by his wife, Linda Keith Stanford ’64, daughter Stephanie Stanford Branham ’91, and son Dr. Lowry Claiborne Stanford Jr. ’94.
John Newton Wrinkle of Birmingham on July 20. A Chattanooga native, he graduated summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University, where he was awarded the Founder’s Medal for highest academic achievement in the College of Arts and Sciences. After serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, Wrinkle entered Yale Law School and graduated in 1955. He moved to Birmingham to join the firm then known as Bradley, Arant, Rose, and White, serving as a partner for many years and as Of Counsel long into his retirement. After his retirement, Wrinkle served as BSC’s pre-law advisor and on the Norton Board of Advisors and was designated as a Distinguished Fellow of the College in 1995. He was a member of St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church for more than 50 years.
