Top students, faculty, and staff recognized on Honors Day 2023

At BSC’s annual Honors Day on May 4, the College’s highest achievers and servant leaders were recognized for their accomplishments.

The annual convocation included remarks by Rachel Buchan ’15, currently serving as Economic Development and Project Administrator for Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin after completing a year in Turkey as a Fulbright Scholar, a Rotary Peace Fellowship in Brisbane, and a master’s degree in peace and conflict studies at the University of Queensland. The Student Government Association presented surprise awards to Dr. David Eberhardt, Vice President for Student Development, and President Daniel B. Coleman for their steady leadership during a challenging time for the College.

Top awards presented include:

  • The Donald C. Harrison Honors Program Senior Award to Lauren Grace Barnett of Arab, who will graduate with a major in economics and will attend graduate school in economics at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
  • The President’s Service Award to Lauren Grace Barnett, who served as president of the Student Government Association this year, and Head Baseball Coach Jan Weisberg, who joined BSC in 2007 and recently notched his 500th career coaching win, followed shortly by his 500th coaching win on the Hilltop.
  • The Nancy and Billy McDonald Outstanding Servant Leader Award to Lindsey Noelle Hitchcock, a junior from Huntsville, majoring in religion.
  • The Hess Center for Leadership and Service Distinction in Leadership Studies Award to Aliya Grace Epps of Avondale Estates, Ga. and Kenye’ Shauntiece Underwood of Tuscaloosa. 
  • The Henry C. Randall Advisor of the Year to Katelyn Geddings, Interim Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. 
  • The Dudley Long Leadership Award, which recognizes a student or group who has initiated or strengthened campus life, to We the Neighbors, which connects BSC students to community partners to address homelessness and poverty.
  • Diversity in the Classroom Award to Dr. Louanne Jacobs, Associate Professor of Education. 
  • The Hubbs Award, which recognizes the student who best exemplifies the twin principles of academic excellence and selfless service on which the College was founded, to Sydney Anne Scarpulla, a junior psychology major from Alabaster.
  • The Omicron Delta Kappa Excellence in Teaching Award to Dr. Ream Shoreibah, Assistant Professor of Marketing. 
  • The Robert Hewlin Jackson Meritorious Scholarship Award, which honors the student who is at the top of the graduating class, to Noah Martin Lunsford, a Psychology major from Chelsea.
  • The Robert Hewlin Jackson Achievement Award, which recognizes a graduating senior who has achieved academic excellence in the junior and senior years and has shown the greatest improvement over the four years of college, to Dhruv Patel, a computer science major from Decatur.
  • The Crawford and Bette Owen Endowed Seminary Award to senior Reagan Nicole Green, a religion major from Hoover who will seek her master of divinity degree as a Carpenter Fellow at Vanderbilt University Divinity School.
  • The Black Student Union Scholarship to Matthew Lafayette Dale, a junior biology major from Birmingham.

BSC is one of just three Alabama institutions that shelter chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honor society in the United States. The 2023 class includes:
