In an interview with Birmingham Times, Bishop Jim Lowe ’74 of the Guiding Light Church shares his memories of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing and what motivates him today. “I have a desire in my heart to do all I can to help people to come to a true sincere love and respect of one another and deal with differences in such a way that tragedies like this will never have to occur again.”

Randall Howard ’86 of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., has been reappointed to the Daytona State College District Board of Trustees. Howard is the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. A 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force, he previously served as vice president of business affairs and treasurer at Ball State University. Howard earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and chemistry from BSC, his master’s degree in operations research from the Air Force Institute of Technology and his doctorate in finance from the University of Georgia.

The Birmingham Business Journal selected Dr. Connie Hill ’86 as one of the Top Birmingham Women for 2022. These awards recognize women who have risen to the pinnacle of their industries or fields and who have a long and tangible track record of results and impact in the community and their industries. Hill serves as the president and CEO of Girls Inc. of Central Alabama.

The United States District for the Northern District of Alabama has appointed Bankruptcy Judge Jennifer Harris Henderson ’01 of Tuscaloosa to serve as the Chief Judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Alabama, effective Oct. 1. She received her B.A. magna cum laude from BSC in 2001 and her law degree summa cum laude from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2004. Following law school, Judge Henderson served as a law clerk to Bankruptcy Judge Thomas B. Bennett.

Gaillard Ladd, Jr. ’02 of Mobile has been appointed Municipal Judge of Dauphin Island. He will continue his litigation practice at Armbrecht Jackson LLP.

Tom Hermans-Webster ’12 graduated in May from Boston University with a Ph.D. in Constructive Theology and Theological Ethics. In August, he became the Acquiring Editor for Orbis Books in Maryknoll, NY. The company — a leader in religious publishing since 1970 — addresses a broad readership exploring the global dimensions of faith, theology, and ethics, serving the cause of reconciliation, peace, and liberation. His father, the Rev. Fred E. Webster, Jr. ’77, and brother, Matthew Webster ’15, are both BSC graduates.

Dunya Habash ’16, a PhD Candidate in Ethnomusicology at the University of Cambridge, helped curate the June 2022 exhibit, “The Written Word: Timeless Arabic and Hebrew Calligraphy,” at the Woolf Institute, Cambridge. She appeared on the BBC to promote the exhibit. Through a Woolf Institute Cambridge Scholarship, Habash’s ethnographic research with Syrian musicians in Turkey examines the effects of ‘integration’ on music-making and more generally on Syrian cultural practices and imaginaries post-displacement. Her brother Majd Habash is a 2017 BSC graduate.

Andrew Triplett ’19 graduated in April 2022 from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, and works for the law office of Beddow, Erben, Bowen, & Wales. Triplett also serves on the BSC Young Alumni Council.

Dr. Ream Shoreibah, assistant professor of marketing, served on a panel at the 2022 Birmingham Business Journal’s Women’s Summit on Sept. 23 at the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa. The panel led a discussion on “Everybody’s Space: Overcoming Obstacles to Succeed in the Workplace and Keep Diversity in Leadership.”

 

Ben Tracy ’11 and Kait Tracy ’12 welcomed their second child, Simon Jeffrey Tracy on July 30, 2022. His middle name is in honor of Kait’s father, Jeffrey Talley ’86. Simon joins big sister Rose.

 

Flora Sarinopoulos Boardman ’46 of Huntsville on September 19, 2022. Boardman graduated Phi Beta Kappa as salutatorian from BSC at age 19 and earned a graduate degree from the University of New Mexico, before joining the faculty at Auburn University. In 1951, Boardman was hired as an engineering technician at Hayes Aircraft Corporation in Birmingham, as the only female professional in the department. She taught Spanish at University of Alabama-Huntsville for 30 years, then continued to teach Beginner Spanish for seniors until the 2010s. Boardman was trilingual — fluent in English, Greek, and Spanish — and she and her husband were avid travelers. She served as an Orthodox missionary to Mexico, Guatemala, Albania, and Alaska.

Joseph Collins Penrith Turner ’65 of Demopolis on Sept. 11, 2022. An avid photographer, he produced black-and-white prints from thousands of glass plate negatives of F. S. McKnight, a 19th century photographer in Aberdeen, Miss. The project was funded by a grant through the University of Mississippi and the National Geographic Society. At age 58, Turner received a Masters of Fine Arts degree from The Savannah College of Art and Design. He taught photography formally and informally for several years. Turner was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at BSC. He was an active member of the Marengo County Historical Society, a trustee of the St. Andrew’s Cemetery Association, a supporter of the Marengo County History and Archives Museum and a parishioner of Trinity Episcopal Church. Turner’s survivors include his wife Martha Hightower Turner ’65 and son John Hightower Turner ’96.

Grover Cleveland (G.C.) Hunt, Jr. ’50 of Northbrook, Ill., on September 2, 2022. After serving in the U.S. Navy as an aviation electronic technician during World War II, he worked at Old Republic Life Insurance Co. for 40 years, ultimately serving as a vice-president. He was a member of The Village Presbyterian Church Northbrook and Sunset Ridge Country Club. His survivors include his wife, Phyllis Carling Anderson Hunt ’48.

Jerry Laurence Thornton ’71 of Hayneville, Ala., on September 23, 2022. Thornton earned his law degree from the University of Alabama Law School in 1974. Upon graduation from law school, he began his career as an assistant district attorney in Jefferson County. In his more than 48 years as a practicing attorney, Thornton served as an assistant district attorney in the Second Judicial Circuit for 19 years. He was also the attorney for the Alabama Department of Human Resources for many years. He served as a Bar Commissioner for the Alabama State Bar, was a member of Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, National Trial Lawyers Association, Volunteer Lawyers Program, Alabama Trial Lawyers Association, and served as an advisory board member of BancorpSouth Bank.

Charlton David Keen, Jr. ’63 of Marianna Fla., on Sept. 23, 2022. Keen was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and earned a master’s degree in social sciences from Florida State University. He was on faculty at Chipola College from 1965 through 2003, and also served as division chair, dean of education and vice president of instructional and student services. For many years, he was on the Marianna Coca Cola Bottling Company’s board of directorss. He served on the Diaconate and as Sunday School Superintendent of the First Presbyterian Church of Marianna. Keen was active for 37 years in the Lions Club International, serving in numerous capacities at the local, district, state and national levels. He also served on the boards of various local, state, and regional nonprofit organizations.
