Durbin Gallery: Cole and Shook
From now until March 4, Professors of Art Steve Cole and Kevin Shook have work on display in the Kennedy Art Center Durbin Gallery at Birmingham-Southern. Both faculty members have selected work from their individual sabbaticals to create the show.
The gallery space is currently open to the campus community, following COVID-19 safety protocols and limited capacity requirements. For those off campus, see our virtual galleries below for a look at what’s on display.
Cole’s work is based on observational drawings – primarily from the Birmingham Museum of Art – as well as drawings from Ruffner Mountain, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida. The pieces on display showcase Cole’s skill in various mediums, from watercolor and ink to graphite and mixed media.

Shook’s collection is titled “The Amended Society: Training a Generation” and examines mass shootings and the impact of gun violence on American society and culture through pigment prints and sculpture. “The iconographic imagery creates a language that questions and attempts to decipher the cultural impact of violent events on our society,” Shook says in his artist statement. “The work created does not intend to solve societal problems. The intention is that the viewer investigates their understanding of gun violence and its societal impacts.”
