Hello From the President’s Office
During a fall like no other, two new staff members in the President’s Office have helped Birmingham-Southern reimagine normal campus life during COVID-19 and look forward to new plans and programs.
Brooke Bowles started her role officially on March 16, when campus shut down, as assistant to the President. Ying Lin joined BSC as chief of staff in summer 2020, as President Daniel B. Coleman and senior staff were finalizing a return plan for the fall.
“I haven’t experienced spring at the Hilltop, so I’m looking forward to it all,” Lin says. “I love getting to meet new people and learn about what they do or what they teach, and what their experience has been like at BSC. I hope we have more opportunities for campus-wide activities and sporting events soon.”
As chief of staff, Lin works with the president in the planning, preparing, and execution of strategic projects. She has recently served as a strategic planning analyst at Region’s Bank and holds bachelor degrees in business administration and global studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Bowles comes to BSC with nearly 25 years of non-profit experience in Birmingham, having worked with Glenwood, Inc. and UAB’s Lifelong Coordination Clinic. In 2007, Bowles founded Triumph Services, Inc., an organization that provides independent living skills, employment, social skills training, and counseling for individuals with developmental disabilities. In 2019, she founded Bowles Consulting, LLC, refocusing her career on helping nonprofits grow. Now, Bowles brings her wealth of experience to the President’s Office and makes sure they are working productively and efficiently.
Both Bowles and Lin have been instrumental in making in-person classes and student life a reality – and have definitely seen success in the College’s efforts. During the last week of classes and COVID-19 testing, BSC had a zero percent positivity rate among students, faculty, and staff who were tested.
“I have really enjoyed being a Contact Tracer on the COVID-19 Team,” Bowles says. “This opportunity allows me to connect with students and be part of the success BSC is experiencing in managing this virus.”
They are also both involved in other exciting, yet-to-be-announced projects that will impact BSC as well as the greater Birmingham community, so stay tuned for news from their office.
