Summer Term 2020

For the summer 2020 term, Birmingham-Southern is offering 53 online courses and has seen record enrollment in the largest number of online offerings ever.

Students taking online classes chose from a wide range of topics, including courses in business, biology, chemistry, education, media and film studies, and sociology with more than 30 different faculty members who are teaching during the term.

“In the past few years, BSC has moved to strengthen summer school offerings by adding online classes,” says Provost Dr. Brad Caskey. “Our efforts have paid off as we have seen a significant growth in the number of online summer classes while receiving positive feedback from students. The availability of such high caliber courses is especially important at a time when schools are no longer offering in-person summer courses, but demand for such educational opportunities remains strong.”

More than 200 students are registered for summer classes and have the opportunity to earn general education credits or credits for their majors. From introductory courses to more specific 400-level courses, BSC students enrolled in the summer term chose from a variety of offerings that work best for their credit requirements. For some students, courses will not only help them fulfill required credits but will also push them to explore topics they’re most interested in throughout the summer. McKenzie Driskell, a senior history major from Athens, Alabama, is taking an urban environmental studies course to cultivate her interest in environmental law.

“I have noticed that our campus and city of Birmingham can do more to be a green community and would love to get some more general knowledge on environmental science so that I may help change this,” Driskell says.

BSC first transitioned online in March, and students will have access to the same resources they had throughout the spring to help keep them connected. Also, while online classes could accommodate more students, the summer courses will not exceed 25 students per class, maintaining the personal education that’s essential to BSC, even online.
