Meet Ahkeem Lee, a history major and recent graduate. Ahkeem works at his church, the historic 16th Street Baptist Church, and manages their tour ministry.

Why did you choose BSC?

The close-knit community and kindness of the students, faculty, and staff caused me to choose BSC over my other options. My first time on campus was the day I decided that the school was perfect for me. I will never forget the kindness that was shown to my family, and that same kindness continued after I became a student.

What are some things you’ve accomplished here that you would not have been able to accomplish anywhere else?

I gained better communication and public speaking skills that I currently use. I also held important roles on campus which helped shape my leadership abilities.

What are some of your best BSC moments?

My best BSC moments were serving as a College ambassador and Student Government Association member, directing the Gospel Choir, and being a teaching assistant for my favorite professor, Dr. Mark Schantz.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I am the founder and director of a growing ministry, The Birmingham Youth Fellowship Choir. The choir consists of children and youth from all over the city.

What does a normal day of your post-grad career look like?

Along with managing our tour ministry, I also give tours to the thousands of visitors who come each week. Recently, I created an exhibition room with dozens of historical pictures and artifacts that I found in our church archives. Every week, visitors enter the room in awe of what they see. I am currently in the process of preserving the archives so that our rich history will continue to be told for years to come.

How has BSC prepared you for your career?

Birmingham-Southern is the reason that I enjoy history so much. My professors pushed me and allowed me to further appreciate the field. I have gained so much knowledge that I may not have obtained if I chose another school. BSC is one of a kind.
